Sports Trouser Fabrics: How to Read Composition, Weight and Test Records
A fabric name or marketing term is only a starting filter. A more useful comparison considers composition, construction, weight, handle, intended use and source-referenced test records together.
Start with the product record
Review the composition, weight, colour and cut listed for the product, and explain the intended wearing conditions. The same fibre ratio can perform differently because of weave, finishing and construction.
If a product record does not state an item of information, add it to the enquiry rather than inferring it from a similar product description.
Understand common performance descriptions
Descriptions such as breathable, quick-drying, stretch, abrasion-resistant or water-resistant require a specific test method, value and sample for precise comparison. Different methods measure different conditions, so one label cannot determine every use case.
If a team has a specific performance need, explain the use environment and priorities first, then confirm whether suitable material options or relevant test records are available.
Ask three questions when reading a test record
First, what sample was tested; second, what method and conditions were used; third, is that sample directly relevant to the product being discussed. These questions matter more than a report title alone.
Records on the Quality & Test Records page should be located by their reference. Results apply only to the sample named in the report, and any wider applicability should be confirmed for the product.
Complete the material decision
A final material decision can consider wearer comfort, required appearance, care method, budget and availability together. Separating essential conditions from optional ones keeps the discussion focused.
Before confirmation, request a record of the selected material, colour and style rather than relying on a broad material name alone.
Pre-purchase material comparison table
Updated 1 September 2026. Test results must be checked against the sample, method and conditions identified in the relevant report.

| What to confirm | Information to provide or request |
|---|---|
| Composition and construction | Fibre ratio, woven or knitted construction, finishing and intended use. |
| Weight and handle | Fabric weight, expected activity level, season and compatibility with existing teamwear. |
| Colour-fastness or laundering need | The relevant method, sample identity and report reference, rather than a general request for non-fading fabric. |
| Performance description | Prioritise UV, moisture, stretch or water-resistance needs and ask whether a related sample record exists. |
Sources and further reading
- AATCC Standard Test Methods and Procedures
Lists textile methods including moisture management, laundering colour fastness and water resistance.
- Intertek: Colorfastness Testing
Explains laundering, light, rubbing and perspiration colour-fastness test conditions.
Check product-specific information
Material and test information must be checked against the relevant product or report sample. Results apply only to the sample identified in the record.
